Learning Computation

Learning Mathematics is fun because there are lots of ways and activities available for us to understand mathematical concepts. I think the easiest and the most basic one is learning to count through finger counting. Besides learning to count to count from one to ten, I realised that we can use our fingers for learning the multiplication of nine too. It is very amazing how Mathematics can work in different ways for different functions by just using the same method or model.

Other than that, I also learnt addition and subtraction through the number line model and the row model. It can be said that these models were the most common models that were used during my school years. For number line model, the teacher demonstrated first how to use this model for adding and subtracting. To make it easier for us to understand, we were encouraged to use different colours to indicate the adding or subtracting part. It is the same with the row model as well. We were once asked to bring sweets or marbles to be arranged in a row for learning addition. We learnt that addition will make the amount of the recent objects increase and vice versa for subtraction. These models are very helpful for young children to count and also to differentiate the increasing and decreasing amount of objects.

In conclusion, I believe that with appropriate use of models for teaching mathematical knowledge will help children to grab the concepts better and as well as develop their love towards learning Mathematics.
