Introduction to Early Childhood Maths



Children learn Mathematics subconsciously since they are young especially during their play time. Children learn about shapes, colours and numbers by exploring their playing materials such as blocks. Being driven by their curiosity as well, they learn to create and understand basic concepts of Mathematics as well as understand that everything around them is made up of shapes and numbers (Kribes-Zaleta and Bradshaw, 2003).

Irons (1999) indicates that there are five Beginning Processes in which the basic elements of understanding mathematical concepts.




Children form their understanding and concepts about the world through the utilization of their sensory organs (Craig, 2009):
