Early addition/subtraction


Learning resources such as dot cards, numeral cards, five frames and ten frames are suitable for children to learn addition and subtraction. These activities can be carried out in pair or small group work. One of strategies where children learn addition is through “partitioning”. For example: 


To find the answer to 7 + 6, a student might start with 7 and count on, saying, "Seven…8,9,10,11,12,13". However, there are some students that are also able to "bridge to ten". This requires anticipating how many are needed to make ten and then splitting six into three and three (Department of Education and Training, 2009).
