Function Machine



1) Recognise/identify how “things” change 
in relation to each other
2) Describe the change in words or pictures
3) Describe the “rules” that show how the 
things are related


Functional machine: The red gear
Input: The small green circle
Output: The big green triangle

Thus, the red gear functions as an indicator as the “core” part of the pattern where it does not change in terms of its order in this picture.
To indicate the output for the second picture, backtracking process is used to refer to the input of the circle, which is a blue colour. Thus, referring to other outputs as triangles, the output for the small blue circle is a big blue triangle.

Another example of backtracking is as below:
3 + 4 = 7
6 = 5 + 1

(3 + 3) x 2 = 18
18 = (3 + 3) x 2
